Orwell Square

My ironic “office,” the MINISTRY OF DREAMS, HOPES, AND FEARS was installed in George Orwell Square in Barcelona, to process the intimate secrets of the people.  This was a commentary, and interactive satire with random passersby, in resistance to the right-wing ruling party’s Orwellian anti-protest law they had just passed (which made it illegal to “insult Spain, for example).

My intention was to address the problem of the constriction of freedom of expression and protest through an absurdist and ironic performance that referred back to the Spanish Civil War, and the advent of Fascism, by locating it in George Orwell Square—a location that evokes totalitarianism, surveillance, thought control, and the Fascist dictatorship.
